You’ll know if you’ve been following me for a while that I’m loving using the iPhone Mini form factor. Whilst we didn’t get an update with the 14 line up, the 12 and 13 are still great devices.
I wanted to share a couple of links to places I go to read with other fans of the Mini 😀
As I spoke about yesterday I really enjoy using my iPhone 13 Mini. Unfortunately though Apple doesn’t seem to and is dropping it from the line up this year.
I don’t see any reason why I’d give up this little powerhouse for something larger again, it’s become my norm now for a smartphone and a welcome one.
If you’re on a Mini at the moment what do you plan to do? They will be good for years with software updates so until Apple releases another smaller iPhone I don’t see me personally switching back to a 6.1” or 6.7” device.
After using the iPhone 13 Mini for a little while now and reading the rumours for the iPhone 14 I’m convinced that Apple doesn’t need to make the iPhone 14 Mini.
The iPhone 13 Mini runs so well in terms of camera, battery and performance that I can see why Apple wouldn’t create a new one. Rumours seem to point to the iPhone 14 having the same processor as the iPhone 13, a slightly better camera and same battery performance. If I look at that compared to my existing 13 Mini I see no reason for Apple to release a 14 Mini, especially if sales figures aren’t where they would like them to be.
For those of you that want the smaller phone then the iPhone 13 Mini should stick around at £100 less than current pricing. The iPhone 12 Mini is currently fitting that role so I don’t see why the iPhone 13 Mini wouldn’t follow suit. I’d imagine there will be some great refurbished prices too.
It’ll also be better for the environment, reducing some e-waste for those that would have moved to an iPhone 14 model from their perfectly capable iPhone 13 Mini.
I’ve been using the iPhone 13 Mini for exactly 31 days and now I’ve adjusted I don’t think I’ll be going back to a larger device. Whilst I enjoyed the 6.1” screen on my iPhone 11 and regular 13 the trade off in ergonomics isn’t worth it (for me). Using the larger 11 and 13 has had a negative effect on my RSI and hand fatigue and using the 13 Mini has been a positive one for this issue.
Being able to use a device that’s smaller and lighter than what I’ve used for years has been eye opening.
I can get through a day fine on the battery and the camera is as good as anything I’ve used. I don’t miss zoom from the Pro and iPhone cameras have been great since the 11, especially in lower light conditions.
It’s a shame that there won’t be a Mini model going forward but honestly the 13 Mini is so good it doesn’t really need an update. I’m hoping all of the Mini owners don’t cave in and buy a 14 too. It’ll send a small message to Apple and be a win for the environment.
The iPhone 13 Mini is rapidly becoming one of my favourite iPhone models and I’ve started to use it without a case. I had previously been using the Apple leather one but now I’m past my return period and paying for Apple Care+ I’ve gone back to the case-less lifestyle.
When I asked other 13 Mini owners it seems that the majority of users also use them without cases. Now I hope this 80% has Apple Care+ or more careful than me but I have to say I’m liking it without a case. It brings me back to those iPhone 5 days. It is taking a bit of adjust to the grip and width but I’m getting there.
It’s also nice seeing the design, I’ve got the starlight model so I like the white back.
With all of the rumours now heating up before the iPhone 14 release in a few months it got me thinking about the apparent lack of an iPhone 14 Mini and how this might be a good thing.
Maybe it won’t matter in the grand scheme of things based on how many 12 and 13 Mini users but if we all stick with our Mini model we love then we aren’t contributing to the mountain of e-waste.
E-waste is a massive problem and one that I’m conscious of whenever I buy new tech, something I try to minimise these days. If I buy I try to buy used and if I do buy new I sell the old one so that it offsets my purchase a little.
Maybe Apple will bring back the Mini form factor in the next SE once the home button is finally done with or maybe we’ll never see the Mini again but as I wrote up yesterday I’m not the only one that loves this model.
I’ve been working through some RSI issues that have resulted in me switching devices a bit lately. I’ve had to stop playing guitar and video games and also rethink how I’m using my device. The iPhone mini size (13 in my case) seems to be the best compromise of form factor for me right now, I’m getting used to the screen size but I love everything else about it. In fact I’ve just sold my iPhone 11 and iPhone 13 to fund it so I’m all in.
I’m using the 256GB 13 mini in starlight (or silver, no idea why it’s called starlight to be honest) along with the golden brown Apple leather case. I’ve been using the case just to add some grip but on the mini it’s not necessary if you have Apple Care +. It’ll most probably come off all of the time soon but even with it on the phone feels a nice size to hold and put in your pocket.
Don’t worry about battery, it’s got plenty to get you through the day with normal usage. If you’re a heavy gamer though you might want to invest in a battery pack if you’re out and about. I find that with my usage it gets me through a day and a half fine.
When you pick storage consider this being the last mini sized iPhone for a while, we may never see another. I don’t think that this form factor will be the future SE, if you want a mini sized iPhone get one now. With that in mind pick as much storage as you can afford, I went middle of the ground with 256GB. My other phones were 128GB so I thought to figure proof it I’d go with more storage. I use iCloud photo storage so this extra space is for future iOS updates and storing my music locally.
Home Screen
I’ve got zoom mode enabled and the font is bumped up a couple of clicks so the icons may seem larger than yours.
I’m only using the apps that come with my iPhone for productivity, that’s mail, calendar, notes and reminders. They all suit my needs and it’s nice not switching or thinking about switching apps all of the time.
I’m still using Glass for my photo sharing, Tweetbot is my twitter client of choice, reeder for RSS and WordPress for blogging.
I don’t listen to a lot of podcasts anymore so overcast is now in the App Library. It’s been nice not always having something in my ear to listen to for a change.
Now I’ve got my own car again maps has worked it’s way back to my Home Screen.
Here’s my wallpaper.
Overall right now I’m happy with this setup. I’m trying to use it less and when I do be intentional about it.
The iPhone 13 mini seems to have a small but dedicated fan base and I can see why now I’m using one.
Both Jonathan and Garrett seem to feel the same way, it’s nice to use a smaller device that’s not uncomfortable and (for me) gets out of the way.
Also, remember that Apple isn’t going to take your existing mini from you when the 14 comes out, if you’re happy using it then don’t upgrade.
I’ve been switching between iPhone models this year, all in a bid to try to resolve some ongoing RSI issues. I’ve used the iPhone 7, 11, 13, 13 Pro and 13 Mini in the last 7 months and whilst I’m not fully settled yet I do have a good grasp on what each model offers.
I thought for this post I’d concentrate on the iPhone 13 Mini. A model I’d looked towards with it’s smaller form factor whilst keeping the great cameras from the 13 and the larger screen to body ratio than that of the SE 2022.
My view was to get the biggest storage iPhone 13 mini I could budget for and keep it for as long as possible given it doesn’t look like there will be a new model anytime soon.
What I’m finding is that it’s not too small so far. I do have the system setting set to zoom and the font size set a few clicks up from standard and for my use it’s working out ok. I’m having to adjust coming from a 6.1” screen but I’m also using my phone less. If I’m at home I’ll use my iPad Mini or MacBook Air, I’m not really mindlessly scrolling social media on it. I use it for a camera, music, podcasts and everything else you’d want from a phone when you’re out and about.
Typing is ok too, I’m not looking at the keyboard when I’m typing so I must be getting used to it.
I can use it one handed and not have to do hand gymnastics and thanks to the smaller device I hold it differently so the sharper edges don’t dig into my hand.
Where I think I can advise is, if you are looking for the 13 mini to be your only device then as long as you can handle a bigger device then get the regular 13 or the Pro, you’ll appreciate the larger screen.
If you have other devices or have RSI issues or want to disconnect a bit more or use your phone as a tool then the Mini is a great way to go. It’s not too small in my opinion and you might be pleasantly surprised at how much you like this smartphone that feels like it’s from a time where smartphones were a reasonable size.
PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) is something that all of the OLED iPhone models suffer from, which includes my current iPhone 13 Mini. This post gives a good overview of how you can help reduce this if you notice it.
I made a quick video showing what this looks like on the iPhone 13 Mini in real life.
This was to help anyone that does experience eye strain or worse due to this approach to screen dimming and want to get an iPhone 13 Mini. I hope this helps you make your decision before buying then needing to return.
I picked up an iPhone 13 Mini today and in my initial testing I’m surprised at the lack of close focus. I’m not talking Macro here, just getting close like I did on my iPhone 11.
Here’s how close I usually get on my iPhone 11Here’s how close I can get with the 13 Mini and still have the text in focus
It’s a strange one and something that is already annoying me. The range of focus must be different due to the lens changes in the 13 range but I’m trying to figure out if I have a defective unit or not.
The way around is to get to this range then use the digital room to get closer, not ideal.
You can see the noise in this iPhone 13 Mini image due to zooming in
Does anyone know anything about this or how I could fix? I
