Are all in-display fingerprint scanners bad?

Switching over to the Nothing Phone (1) I was reminded how great FaceID was. I always liked TouchID so thought I might get away with an in-display one but in my experience of this phone and my work Samsung A52 – they aren’t good at all. The Nothing doesn’t recognise my fingerprint about 30% of the time, which is better than the Samsung but I’m wondering if they are all this bad?

I previously used a Pixel 3A and the fingerprint sensor on the back of that phone was perfect, better placement than TouchID on the home button of an iPhone and reliable.

Have you used one that doesn’t fail a lot of the time?
